Working and staying indoors, wearing clothes, and avoiding the sun could mean you’re not receiving adequate supplies of vitamin D. The nutrient enables normal bone mineralisation, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) pointed out. Decreased mineralisation, otherwise, leads to a condition called osteomalacia.

The Cleveland Clinic explained that osteomalacia means “soft bones”.

Symptoms such as bone pain – especially in the hips – and muscle weakness are indicative of the condition

Furthermore, softened bones may lead to a number of fractures.

Some patients might develop difficulty with walking if they’re deficient in vitamin D for a long time.

Osteomalacia is a direct result of a prolonged vitamin D deficiency.

Treatment includes vitamin D supplementation and wearing braces to reduce or prevent bone irregularities.

In severe cases, surgery might be needed to correct bone deformities.

The NIH highlighted another way to ingest the fat-soluble vitamin.

As vitamin D is naturally present in some foods, eating trout or mackerel, for example, could raise vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D is vital for bone growth and bone remodelling, protecting older adults from osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis differs from osteomalacia in that it’s the weakening – not softening – of the bones.

The NHS added that a broken wrist, hip or spinal cord is common for people who develop osteoporosis.

Breaking a bone is not only painful, it can take a long time to recover from.

It can prevent a person from leading a normal life – and it could interfere with one’s work.

Clearly there are benefits to receiving an adequate supply of vitamin D, as not to weaken or soften the bones.

During the autumn and winter, the national health service recommends that all adults take vitamin D supplementation.

However, if you choose to take a vitamin D supplement all-year round, the NHS will approve.

People with darker skin are in fact encouraged to take a vitamin D supplement everyday throughout the year.

How much vitamin D supplementation should I take?

The NHS recommend a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D.
