The Secret To Halle Berry’s Rock-Hard Abs At 54

Halle Berry has always been fit, but at 54, the actress seems to be defying the ageing process. Along with a string of films that have seen her flex not only her acting chops, but her stunt work and physicality too, Berry has continued to be an advocate for the importance of exercise, fuelling your body, and prioritising health. It’s no secret that the star is a beast in the gym. Just take a scroll through her Instagram and you’ll be presented with numerous images of Berry going full “beast mode” at the gym, whether it’s boxing, a HIIT class, or a beach workout. But when it comes to her rock-hard abs, Berry credits one workout in particular: boxing.

Recently, the star took to Instagram to post a photo with the caption: “I hear it’s #NationalFitnessDay.” In it, the star wears leggings and a crop top and is seen sporting boxing gloves as she eyes down a punching bag. Fans were quick to express their awe and admiration at the star, with one commenting: “ABSSS”. 

For Berry, boxing is her favourite workout and one she consistently does. On Instagram, she frequently posts images of her sparring in the ring or punching bag, and calls it “one of the best full-body workouts.” She added, “You’ll sculpt every muscle and burn major calories and fat. It dramatically decreases stress levels, develops hand-eye coordination, and builds confidence and discipline. But most importantly…you’ll never stop learning.”

It’s a remarkable feat, particularly as Berry has been boxing for 13 years. Even so, she says she continues to learn new ways to challenge herself and work new muscles with her boxing workouts. But even despite her love of boxing, Berry is still a fan of mixing things up and in an essay written for Women’s Health, she explained that she got her strong core while doing gymnastics as a kid. Now, she switches things up to add variety to her fitness regimen and stay strong.

“Over the years, I’ve done my fair share of crunches and setups, but one of the biggest game-changers for my abs over the years has been martial arts,” she wrote. “Depending on the week, between 30 to 50 per cent of my workouts focus on mixed martial arts (MMA) like jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, and capoeira. When you’re practicing MMA, you’re using your core the whole damn time. You’re constantly bracing, twisting, and ducking. It’s a recipe for really strong abs.”

While Berry certainly is fitspo when it comes to abs (and fitness in general), she admits she’s struggled at times with body acceptance. “My abdomen is my problem area so I have to work extra hard,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I enjoyed my holiday time off a little too much, but now I’m back at it. I share with you my ab workout after my workout. YEP, that’s what I said. I do a whole workout after my workout.”
