Supplements can be a handy way to ensure you’re getting all your vitamins and nutrients, without having to check the nutritional information of everything you eat. We get many of the nutrients we need from our diet, but a few dietary supplements can help towards reaching our goal, and offering some extra health benefits along the way.

The One Show presenter Angela Scanlon intrigued her 230,000 Instagram followers by sharing a handful of an array of supplements.

In an Instagram post labelling her palmful of pills, Angela listed: Probiotic, omega-3, magnesium, Lion’s Mane, digestive enzyme, chlorella, pregnancy multi, greens and vitamin D.

She clarified in an Instagram story: “I don’t take all of them every day”.

The Irish television personality is currently expecting her second child, so it’s no surprise she’s making sure to get all her vitamins, with the help of some supplements.

If you’re thinking of introducing any new supplements to your diet, make sure to check with your doctor they won’t interfere with any medicines you might be taking.

But what do each of the supplements listed do? Here’s each of Angela supplements explained.

Probiotic

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts which are thought to restore the natural balance of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria in your gut.

Having a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut can help aid digestion.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids have a number of health benefits.

This substance makes up cell membranes, helps keep your organs functioning properly and keeps your immune system fighting fit.

Omega-3 is also thought to help boost memory and even help you sleep.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral involved in hundreds of your body’s essential functions, including converting food into energy, muscle movements and regulating your nervous system.

Many people don’t get the magnesium they need from food alone, so a substance can help boost both brain and body function.

Lion’s Mane

This exciting-sounding supplement is made from Lion’s Mane mushrooms.

These mushrooms are found in Asian countries, and have been associated with many health benefits.

Lion’s Mane is thought to have anti-inflammatory effects, as well as boosting your immune system, heart health and brain function.

Digestive Enzyme

Angela doesn’t specify which type of digestive enzyme she has, but there are many different types available.

Your body naturally produces digestive enzymes to break down food, but taking additional ones in the form of supplements can help break down certain foods.

For example, lactase supplements can help you break down lactose products such as dairy.

Chlorella

Chlorella are microscopic algae filled with vitamins, minerals, protein and chlorophyll.

Though they are only small, chlorella contains protein, omega-3, lutein, vitamin K, calcium, potassium, vitamin C, iron, zinc, magnesium, vitamin B12 and chlorophyll.

This green supplement is thought to support a healthy immune system and make skin look younger.

Pregnancy Multi

Pregnancy multivitamins are recommended to all expectant mothers to keep both mum and baby strong during pregnancy.

These multivitamins tend to contain folic acid, iron and vitamin D.

Greens

Angela doesn’t specify which supplement this is, but you can get many greens supplements.

Most green supplements will contain extracts of spinach, spirulina, alfalfa, kale or wheatgrass.

These help you get many of the nutritional benefits of eating all those vegetables, in one simple pill.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is also known as the sunshine vitamin, because during the summer months our bodies create it naturally from sunlight.

During the winter months in the UK, everyone over the age of four is advised to take a vitamin D supplement, as the daylight isn’t strong enough for us to make it ourselves.

Vitamin D keeps our bones healthy, and can aid a healthy immune system and brain function.
