Mark Wahlberg Shows Off a Tough, Ab-Smashing Exercise

Mark Wahlberg’s gym exploits are always the subject of intrigue for his fans. From his ridiculous, much-discussed 2:30 a.m. wakeup—a routine he told MH he adjusted during the pandemic so that he could make the most of his family time—to his group training with famous friends, the actor appears to be one of the most active and disciplined celebs in Hollywood.

But recently, Wahlberg went through the process of gaining a significant amount of weight for Father Stu, in which he plays a boxer-turned-priest and transforms from fit to… decidedly not. He reportedly put on 30 pounds for the role over a span of three weeks—which he says he achieved by eating 11,000 calories a day at his peak in May.

“Unfortunately, I had to consume, for two weeks, 7,000 calories, and then for another two weeks, 11,000 calories. And it was fun for about an hour,” he told Jimmy Fallon during a Tonight Show appearance. “It’s such a hard, physical thing to do. Losing weight, you just kind of tough it out—you just don’t eat, and exercise. And this, even when you’re full, I would wake up after a meal and have another meal. I was eating every three hours. It was not fun.”

Fans might understandably be concerned that the typically buff actor might have a tough time rebounding from the extreme weight gain. But now, just a few months later, Wahlberg is back to his typical six-pack self, as he proved in a quick clip posted to Instagram showing off an ab workout.

Wahlberg ditched his shirt to show off a set of hanging leg raises, working to lift both his legs in a standard position and to the right and left side, to work his oblique muscles. The move can be an effective, punishing method to smash your core muscles—just as long as you keep your shoulders engaged, you squeeze your core, and keep your legs forward in a hanging hollow hold position throughout the entire round.
