Blood pressure expresses the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. If this force is consistently too high, it becomes a health condition that can eventually lead to heart problems. Could a certain drink, growing in popularity, be the key to reducing your risk?
Celery juice is rich in vitamins and minerals, celery contains nutrients with anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and gut-friendly properties.
Studies have shown that celery extract consumption can help prevent stroke, lower blood pressure and reduce plaque in arteries.
Containing high levels of coumarins, celery juice helps lower the number of stress hormones in the body, which in turn reduces the symptoms of hypertension.
Celery contains a phytochemical called phthalides.
As an extract, it’s called NBP, and it relaxes the tissues of the artery walls to increase blood flow and reduce blood pressure.
Eating the whole food, though, is better.
Celery stalk salt content is low, and you also get fibre, magnesium and potassium to help regulate your blood pressure, as well.
In a study published in the National Library of Health, blood pressure change after celery juice ingestion in hypertensive elderly males was analysed.
The study looked at a 74-year-old man presented with neck pain and a history of hypertension as diagnosed by his primary care provider.
He had attempted different medications for his hypertension, but he reported that they gave him the side effect of chest discomfort.
His initial physical examination blood pressure measurement was 150/80 mmHg.
Interventions included daily intake of celery juice over six months, which was approved by his medical doctor’s nurse.
At the end of his care, his blood pressure measured 118/82 mmHg.
“This elderly patient responded positively to the inclusion of celery juice and chiropractic care after six months,” concluded the study.
What counts as a high blood pressure?
High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90 millimetres of mercury (mmHg) or anything above, according to the NHS.
Blood pressure is recorded with two numbers – systolic pressure (the higher number) and diastolic pressure (the lower number).
The only reliable way to find out your blood pressure is by having a reading.
